‘The Exuviae Of Gods – Part II’ continues what Mournful Congregation have started on Part 1. Where they have taken a track from their legendary 1995 demo, ‘An Epic Dream Of Desire’, and re-recorded it with today’s recording technology. And add onto that they have also given us two brand new compositions to round out ‘The Exuviae Of Gods – Part II’ to a nice forty minutes worth of always excellent Mournful Congregation styled Funeral Doom Metal.
Now I may be in the minority here but I do not understand re-recording past works unless they are done as a reimagining, reworking. But sometimes I do truly enjoy when that opinion of mine is proven wrong by an exceptional band. And thankfully Mournful Congregation have done just that with the re-recorded track ‘Heads Bowed’, which leads off this tasty EP. Now, much like ‘An Epic Dream Of Desire’ from ‘…- Part I’, this new version is only a redo with modern technology. Yet, unlike ‘…- Part I’ this old track done anew fits perfectly right where it sits in this EP. Acting as the starting point to swells, growth and grandioseness that the path of this EP leads us on.
Following ‘Head’s Bowed’ is the first of the two new tracks, ‘The Forbidden Abysm’. Albeit a brand new song, this piece of art works as a sort of bridge between the older material and these two newer ones. Showcasing the strength of their sound of yore while inserting the growth and progression they have gained throughout their flawless thirty year career. (Thirty years and no Cold Lake or St. Anger’s to be found, impressive as fuck if you ask me).
Finishing off this fabulous adventure is the majestic and grandiose ‘The Paling Crest’. An eighteen minute and forty second journey that gives us a grand tour through the Mournful Congregation of today. This track is outstanding and worth getting this EP for all by itself. But thankfully for us the whole thing works as one stellar piece of art that ebs and flows in a truly fantastical way for Funeral Doom that only Mournful Congregation know how to do.
