The hotly anticipated self-titled debut from Corpus Offal has been released on the incredible 20 Buck Spin label. Comprising musicians from noteworthy other acts including Bell Witch, Caustic Wound, and Cerebral Rot. VM-Underground has previously covered Corpus Offal’s 2024 Demo release. A trim, two track affair that had left many a metal head in a state of ravenous anticipation for the notion of a full-length release from this exciting band.
Frankly, album number one here is a smash. One obvious element on show is the frequent time signature changes that were formerly present on the Demo tape. This allows Corpus Offal to enticingly flick a switch between their Autopsy paced, vaguely Thrash influenced brand of Death Metal before comfortably morphing into slowed down sections of all enveloping Death Doom replete with freight train paced mother-chugging glacial riffage. The wonderful, virtuous drum performances and distorted bass lines give the album plenty of overtly rigid backbone and muscle. Ian Schwab’s vocals are particularly interesting as his clearly impressive range makes it hard to pinpoint one particular obvious inspiration; one moment you’re hearing the low, subterranean earth shattering roars reminiscent of Nile’s Karl Sanders and then the next, it’s something akin to the aggressive vomit speech found on a Last Days of Humanity record.
Corpus Offal have served up one hell of a rancid offering here. It’s a woozy and congested, mid paced old school Death Metal album full of dive-bomb guitar soloing and it comes as no disappointment whatsoever. For fans of Autopsy, Incantation, and Bolt Thrower.
