These Romanians serve up bass heavy and completely rotten Death Metal on ‘Unfazed by Death’, released originally back in 2016. This is nefarious music by rockers who know their craft, moments into ‘Stench of Death’ and you’ll know what I mean. The production here sounds great. Everything is clear without having that “big studio” obtuseness. Gloomy guitars from the swamp sound downtuned and dreary like the music is being psychically-emitted forth from a vampire’s castle, paired with a prominent bass guitar sound and a loud and commanding snare that hits like a hammer.
Imagine ‘Severed Survival’-era Autopsy chopped up and mixed with some Morpheus Descends, Bolt Thrower and Grave on this release, proper rocking zombie apocalypse music. There’s a decent variety here, ‘Dark War’ deploys the blastbeats and headbanging rock and roll graveyard parts together with dramatic pauses to break up the sections whereas the tempo slows a handful of times to a slouching discombobulation across the demo like on the track ‘Warding Blood’.
I’ve enjoyed other works by this band like 2018’s ‘Sewer Fiends’ and especially ‘Slither in Slime’ from 2022, that is such a badass album and one of my favourite 2020’s-era Death Metal albums (so far). That being said I had still had fun going back and exploring the original demo which I hadn’t had the pleasure of listening to yet beforehand, and I’m definitely glad I did. This is a perfectly digestible sized piece of raw flesh for the Death Metal enjoyer. The Momento Mori reissue for the tenth anniversary of this demo sounds sharp and this holds up well in my opinion a decade on.
