Formed by two individuals who share a common background in Funeral Vomit , Cadaveric Messiah releases a 15-minute debut EP. Although on first hearing Funeral Vomit and Cadaveric Messiah do seem to be cut from the same musical cloth, we can speak of a somewhat more Canadian/European Black/Death Metal sound for this new project from the two.
Funeral Vomit is clearly more grounded in the South American chaotic tradition, but it mostly pays homage to the Brazilian scene of the late 80s and its own Colombian roots of the years that followed. Cadaveric Messiah boasts a sound that can be described more as a slightly more Death Metal-oriented version of Blasphemy, making it close to a band like Proclamation and Teitanblood. Yet there are also clear differences to be heard and Cadaveric Messiah claims its own place in this rotten musical constellation.
The main difference is the lack of the all-devouring chaos and the blasting speed. Although it would be unfair to say that on ‘In The Putrid Fumes Of The Abyss’ the band goes into Doom tempos, it is quite a bit slower and consequently exudes a different atmosphere. The absence of those trademark chaotic swirls of violence is compensated by quite unique dynamics that leads you through menacingly slow to briskly up-tempo pieces. The feeling of listening to a Teitanblood or Proclamation record at the wrong speed is enhanced by the strangely roaring vocals that would indeed make you double-check its playing speed.
This nice piece of Colombian Death/Black Metal was originally released as digital EP on the band’s own Bandcamp page, but the Spanish BlackSeed Productions label must have drawn the same conclusion as I did and presented the tracks on a 7” EP at the end of 2024. It comes recommended for those into this specific niche of Extreme Metal.
