Some albums need several listens before they reveal what they’re really about. ‘Death Doom Punks’ isn’t one of them. Arroganz comes straight at you, without asking permission and without much interest in winning anyone over.
What’s interesting is that the album isn’t just a pose. There’s Death, there’s Doom, and there are Punks. The riffs have that old school Extreme Metal flavour that doesn’t need twenty layers of production to sound heavy. The drums hit hard, the bass has plenty of presence, and the guitars build a pretty hostile wall of sound. On top of that, the vocals sound like they’re coming straight out of a sewer full of corpses. Arroganz knows exactly what they want to do, and they don’t stray too far from it.
If you’re looking for constant innovation, some of these songs might feel a little too familiar. But if what you want is Death Metal that smells like a basement, carries a punk attitude, and has enough slow parts to crush you into the floor, there’s more than enough here. And if you enjoy Winter, Asphyx and Coffins, ‘Death Doom Punks’ is something to check out.
A good reminder that sometimes you don’t need to invent anything new.
