Aeternus – A Darker Monument

aeternus – a darker monument

Info

Aeturnus. By some considered as the band that invented Dark Metal, by others considered to be pure unholy grimm Black cult, yet by some also called betrayers of their own unique folky Black Metal sound, since they started playing straight Death Metal some years ago. And then there are of course the people that ‘ve never heard of the band at all, but those are probably the same people as those that do not know that Immortal made more records then just ‘Sons of Northern Darkness’. Anyhow, no matter to what camp you belong, you cannot be not happy with this ‘A Darker Monument’.

For starters, since it is the first thing you notice when listening this album, the very natural feeling of the production, especially the drums. Despite it took me a little time to adapt since my ears are mostly exposed to US Death for instance, but I found this one definitely attractive.

Another thing that remained typically Aeternus are of course the vocals. Not many people have such an raven-like voice coming out of their mouths. Awesome. And, despite it’s mainly Death Metal going on here, it is luckily done the Aeternus way, which means that both Doom and Black are kinda blend in as well, so the oldschool-worshipping troops do not need to worry.

I think the track that is gonna be most appreciated is ‘Litany of Ra’. This exceptional good song ends with some piano tunes, which fit in quite alright, and probably make the wining ‘we-want-Aeturnus=to-make-an-…And so the night became pt.2 -people’ shut the fuck up.

After this quick relief this Norsk onslaughts pleasantly continues with ‘Soulslayer’, which contains the first screams of the album, and just won’t get out of my head. I could go on mentioning every single song, but as they are all of the same quality, that is of not much use.

This is an overall good album, and the Aeternus camp, and more in general, the fans of dark, obscure Metal can pick it up without hesitating. The people unfamiliar with this band should give it a chance as well.

I however wonder sometimes if those people will be reached at all, as it turned out that another tour has been cancelled, and as we all know, there are quite a lot (good) releases every month..If not, that’s a shame, because this band pleases us with varying quality releases for nearly a decade now, and they certainly deserve to get a little bigger as they are at the moment. Let’s hope they return to our stages later on this year after all.
