Satan! Darkness! Hate! These are common topics for Black Metal records, yet mining is rarely among them. Dauthuz from Germany are trying to change this by adding a unique aspect to the lyrical concepts of Extreme Metal. ‘Todeswerk: Uranium II’ is their seventh full-length album dealing with the mostly sinister aspects of mining. While all the satanic stuff should not be taken too seriously, for Dauþuz, the lyrics and artwork are a central and essential part of their craft. Checking out their lyrics is highly recommended.
Musically, the band delivers atmospheric Black Metal. The vocals and songwriting show a great deal of variety, ensuring these generally epic compositions never get boring, while a professional yet fitting production completes the work.
The album easily meets the high standards of its predecessor, even if it does not surpass them. For those looking for sometimes grim, sometimes epic Black Metal beyond the usual satanic blah blah, this comes highly recommended. The same goes for anyone else who simply appreciates good Black Metal.
