Fantasy has always had a place in Black Metal, and Spellblade’s debut demo, ‘Citadel’, shows that it can still be done well. Mixing atmospheric Black Metal with medieval fantasy themes, the project creates an enjoyable journey without becoming over-the-top.
Across four tracks, the anonymous musician takes the listener through ancient castles, forgotten lands and mysterious places. Melody is the main focus, giving the demo its own identity while still keeping enough darkness to satisfy Black Metal fans.
The production is raw but effective. It gives the music an honest underground feel while allowing both the lead melodies and rhythm guitars to stand out. The songs move naturally between quieter and heavier moments, making the demo easy to stay engaged with.
One of ‘Citadel”s biggest strengths is its pacing. The calmer sections fit smoothly into the music and make the heavier moments feel even stronger. Nothing feels rushed or forced.
Although it lasts only eighteen minutes, ‘Citadel’ is a very enjoyable debut. Spellblade shows a good ear for melody and atmosphere, making this a release that leaves you looking forward to hearing more.
