There’s definitely a lot happening on the Unchurch self titled, and it never truly feels like they’re trying too hard. The guitars fretwork is techy and intricate, but they don’t just feel scattered since the bass finds its place in the mix. Then they come crushing in with really nasty chugs every now and then that really tie things together.
The guitars really put in work on this album, but with all of the craziness they do retain enough weight to where it never becomes too flashy or doing too much. I especially thought this was the case when the track ‘Morbid Lust’ kicks in. That nasty guitar solo tears through and instead of holding back what’s going on, it manages to propel things forward even more.
Vocals feel a tiny bit back in the mix than they probably should, but the fact they sound so mean as a result feels about right for this album.
The playing is definitely some of Morbid Ange” territory, but in a way with an older Death Metal technique involved that doesn’t forget the muddier aspects of the sound. The presence of the bass on the album also gives it that extra bit of grit. It really puts the songs into their own zone at that point. Definitely one of those Chile bands you should be aware of. Producing tons of absolute beasts of the extreme, Unchurch fits right into this slot.
