Windir – Sognametal

windir – sognametal

Finally the long awaited Windir DVD is available. Windir’s music is a combination of black metal and Norwegian folk music, which Valfar referred to as Sognametal, due to the strong lyrical connection to the Sogndal. What better name could this DVD get as the name “Sognametal”? Indeed, this is thé best suiting name available!

Well, we all know what happened to Terje ‘Valfar’ Bakken so I don’t see a point in telling the complete sad story all over again. As we all know as well the remaining Windir members decided to quit Windir for one reason only; what would Windir be without its founding member Valfar? One last album was released, to honour Valfar, and it was called “Valfar, ein Windir”. Furtermore the remaining members also decided to do one final goodbye-gig at the 3rd of september 2004. This would have been Valfar’s 26th birtday. The gig was held at Oslo’s Rockefeller and it was, as expected, completely sold out. Over 1200 people took a final farewell with Windir this evening.
For this gig Sture did most of the vocals though Cosmocrator from Mindgrinder as well as Vegard Bakken, brother of Valfar, did some of the vocals too.

About the DVD now. When looking at this final Windir gig I have to admit that I had goosebumps all the time. Eversince the first album “Soknardalr” Windir is very special to me. It is hard to explain but there is something….a connection or…I don’t know. Though for sure Windir means really a lot to me. And when watching this DVD all kinds of memories come to my mind again. And it is a really sad thought that we are never able to see this fantastic band perform live again. All that is left are some fantastic albums and this “Sognametal” DVD which definately shows the capabilities of this great live band. And to be honest I think this DVD is thé best way to tribute and honour Valfar.
The gig itself is shot with multiple camera’s and camera angles and the sound and colours are just perfect. There is absolutely nothing to complain here. It is also worth mentioning that the band actually was able to capture that extraordinary atmosphere on tape so even the ones who were not in Oslo the 3rd of september can feel that special vibe surrounding this very special gig.

Besides this farewell gig some bonus material is added as well. First of all lots of live clips can be seen. The first one from the year 1996 up to the last one from 2003. It is really great to see some parts of the gig Windir did in Oslo 2002 at the John Dee club are included too. I was there at that gig and it was one of thé best gigs I’ve ever seen. So watching these clips do bring back lots of very good memories! Furthermore lots of backstage shots can be seen as well as a photy gallery including both official photos as well as photos from Windir’s private collection. At last there is a short interview which Valfar did with the NRK (Norwegian national television).

All that is left to say is “Sognametal” is a mandatory buy for all Windir fans worldwide! Valfar and his unique music will never be forgotten. Valfar, ein Windir!!! (MarcelB)
