Unfelled is an emerging Atmospheric Black Metal band consisting of some heavy hitters of the underground Metal world. First we have D. ,of Australian act Woods of Desolation, who handles all guitars and bass. On the kit, Vlad from the Ukrainian band Drudkh. It should be no surprise that this is another stunning performance. And on vocals, with the unassuming moniker of “Mitch” (aka Desolate) from the Australian act Austere, seems to be a perfect fit on vocals for this style of Black Metal and this album. The music is relentless in aggression but definitely has its more melodic, headbanging slower parts that I thoroughly enjoy. The guitar playing really stands out to me and has some really cool double guitar harmony parts. The bass also is prominent, unlike so much Black Metal anymore, I feel the bass doesn’t always get the place in the mix it deserves, but this album’s low end thumps. The drumming ranges in tempos and variations, mostly the normal blasts and double bass parts, but at one point on the track “Wreathed Wings” Vlad busted out a pretty sick unexpected groove part! Expected however was the absolutely awesome melodic chorus part following that. Lyrical themes seem to be the typical “War, Death, Bloodshed” type stuff which honestly fit this album beyond perfectly. They really have the aggression and melody aspects of their songs intertwined and performed very nicely. That seems to be the overall theme on this album and while every song has the same kind of feel, at 35 minutes it gets the job done well. Half way through the second track “The Opposer” I was sold. I wholeheartedly recommend this album and think Unfelled are onto something really cool.
