Now, I don’t know how many of you are metaphysical in nature and believe in reincarnation, but damn! I must say that Total Hate is the second coming of the almighty Thunderbolt (Pol). Yes, I am aware that Total Hate was in existence before the final days of Thunderbolt, but they have been steadfast in their output and consistency, and have created a solid if not groundbreaking catalogue of material. The band has always been on my radar since the ‘Depopulating Planet Earth’ release, and it wasn’t till ‘LifeCrusher’ that okay!, they have hit their stride.

The following material, after my initial euphoria from ‘LifeCrusher’, while okay, seemed perhaps a slight step back to earlier-sounding material. It just didn’t grab me as much, at least to these ears. I have to say, tho, this particular release gave me a good kick in the rear with its aggressiveness, speed, and overall production. As mentioned at the beginning, the band really strikes a chord with me and brings back fond memories of Thunderbolt. Now, some may sneer at their cheesy name and or their “typical” sound, but I feel those naysayers may be missing out on some truly vitriolic-sounding Black Metal.

Much can be said for a band that hasn’t changed its sound to suit the times or because it’s not cool anymore. I, for one, appreciate holding true to one’s ideals. One look at the band’s imagery and their presentation makes it clear that they have stayed the course. Now, some may think I must be president of the Total Hate fan club after my glowing reverie of the band. That all could be true, but despite my being happy with the latest release from the band, some of the members have a side project called Goath that tickled my fancy as well. (GO check out that band as well!) So you see? It all makes for a glorious package of Black Metal goodness for all the world to enjoy. I just have to say tho, get ready for a pummeling. This is truly representative of the 2nd wave and follows along those lines.

Fans of early Craft, Behexen, and Gorgoroth should all take a look and see what the band has to offer.
