Total Hate is a German Black Metal band that I found out about on a tour with Elite (one of my personal favourites) and Blodsrit early 2006. And now, two years later their debut is released called ‘Depopulating Planet Earth’. It took the band six years to come out with a debut since the beginning of the band, but I can tell you that is was a wise decision to take that time, because if you are looking for good authentic Raw Black Metal, this is an album that you really should try out!
There is a difference between good and bad ‘chaos’ in Black Metal, and unlike the untalented acts, Total Hate is on the right side of the line. Two songs from this album, ‘Decapitation (Of Jesus Christ)’ and ‘Chapel In Flames’, might already be familiar with those who know the ‘Pure Hatred And Blasphemy’ EP from 2005; well, the other material is quite close to that. Apart from the opener ‘Humanity Banished’ (which is mostly furious), Total Hate’s songs are versatile with a lot of tempo changes: fast ravaging arrangements are fluently combined with slower, mighty epic arrangements. Those who can calculate can see that the average duration of the songs is about seven minutes, and when all of the songs manage to capture and hold my attention, that is a sign that they are well composed and executed.
The sound of the guitar is raw, like the Norwegian bands from the nineties (say Urgehal), the vocals are screamed with despair, and the drums are not massive, but in the good vein of chaotic drumming like known from the better true Black Metal acts: by that I do not mean it ideologically, but in the way that we know from the bands that are generally considered to play 666% real Black Metal. Total Hate is one of those bands…
Okay, the production is rather common, but it breathes the right, nihilist atmosphere, and all that should be heard can be heard in the right way. One might say that it is not the most original, but the execution of it all is beyond doubt. With ‘Depopulating Planet Earth’ Total Hate shows that there are still great Black Metal bands from Germany with their roots firmly in the old Norske sound. If you like raw, nihilist raw Black Metal, this album is one of those albums from 2008 that you must have. Great debut album, without any doubt!
