Mages Terror – Damnations Sight

Info

Australia is the home of some of the most notorious names in the metal underground, reigning from the likes of Gospel of the Horns to Destroyer 666, and in my opinion is one of the most consistent countries when it comes to metal. That consistency has not ceased within the debut Mages Terror album ‘Damnation’s Sight’, the nefarious bastard child of Illogium (the guitarist of Vomitor and Portal) and his horde of ghoulish, Thrash crazed maniacs. Released through the mighty Invictus Productions, this album is the epitome of the old school revival we have been seeing in recent years. True in attitude and sound to the metal of days gone by…

Upon listening to this album there were two things I noticed almost immediately, the vocals. Throughout the initial two tracks, ‘Serpent Bat’ and ‘Paramount Specter Dust’, we can hear Black Metal like vocals that fit viciously on top of the raw and old school riffing throughout the record. Although I did notice, in contrast to the raw and simplistic riffing the solos are quite technical, atleast in the first half of the record. I wouldn’t call this a weakness of this record it is merely something noticeable among the otherwise traditional guitar playing and song structure.

Masters in the Black Cavern’ would have to be my favourite track on this record. There is no particular reason for this, I just love the raw, unrelenting, old-school power that is packed within this style of music. The only letting up within this record would be the interlude track ‘Presage’, just about giving you breathing room before the record is suddenly reimbursed with energy.

Do not get me wrong, this record is no game changer and nothing new is being achieved here yet I believe that is the point. Armoured Angel and Vomitor didn’t bring anything new to the table when they released their debut records, yet they were able to encapsulate the attitude from down under and combine it with the aggressiveness of old school metal! This is pure Australian metal!
