Dutch metal is most certainly a favourite of mine. As the underground grows ever stronger, we can see some stand out acts begin to emerge, one of them being the mighty Lucifericon. Describing themselves as ‘Dark Fucking Metal’ this and combines elements of not only the occult but all things that humanity finds uneasy in nature. With their latest release, ‘Sabatraxas’, being distributed by Invictus productions and a European tour with Power from Hell, I plunged into the burning flame of Lucifericon to relish in the might of the damned.
This record only includes three brand new songs but that does not diminish the value in the slightest, it is always better to have a crushing EP than it is to only have a mediocre record. The three in question are the title track, ‘Paradoxicon Lucifericon’ and ‘Alogos Vel Sethos’. To be brutally honest, I enjoyed this EP, yet I see it as nothing new compared to the rest of the catalogue, which I personally prefer but I can see how the lack of diversity might turn people off. Although I personally think that the lack of differences between these mid-tempo tracks allow for a more hypnotic experience when listening to the first half of this EP, leaving the listener to fall deep into the hands of mystical darkness, where there is no escape, and no way out.
The live part of this EP contains three previously recorded songs ‘Sevenfold’, ‘Khidir’s Urn’ and ‘Qliphotic Trace’, all of which almost take on a different tone once you get to hear them live. When it comes to the sound quality, for a live situation the recording is extremely high quality which highlights the bands skill in a live setting. This ritualistic feeling seems to ooze from these recordings as the low rumbling of Lucifericon beckons us all. Their focus on more mid-tempo aggression is highly prevalent within these live recordings, but I cannot tell why because it is not like these songs have changed. They seem to almost take on a new form of life once brough to the stage, that is why I do genuinely think these live tracks were not included in this EP merely to take up space, they bring a form of Lucifericon we have not yet heard to the turntable.
As I reflect on this EP, I am reminded of the unholy work of both Profanatica and Angelcorpse but also with a twinge of their fellow Invictus Productions label mates Sépulcre. For all of those interested in the type of Death Metal that will haunt your brain and leave you up at night pondering the occult and all it holds, look no further. Lucifericon will serve you to their fullest extent in all their evil glory!
