Luciferion – The Apostate

luciferion – the apostate

Info

Nine years, I repeat nine years after their debut album Luciferion release their follow-up record! Well, I know that the band was disbanded or put on ice for several years when band leader Wojtek Lisicki joined Lost Horizon. And as we all know, Michael Nicklasson joined Dark Tranquillity. Drummer Hans Nilsson went to join a thousand bands which I won’t mention here. Actually, there’s ‘only’ 5 new songs to be heard. The remaining songs consist of their 1994 demo and a Celtic Frost cover. I wish they would have included the other covers they did (a.o., Moirbid Angel, Slayer, Mercyful Fate) on this album as well. The demo songs show how some of the songs on their debut album sounded in an earlier phase. Pretty cool stuff if ya ask me!

Then, the new songs. Though there’s a huge development one can still hear it’s Luciferion. The older stuff (check demo songs) sounded a bit more straightforward, though very well-played and spiced with some technical stuff. Luciferion anno 2003 has become more technical as well as increased in depth and complexity of the songs. It is crystal clear that Luciferion have progressed and developed their own style in the overpopulated scene and do stand out with this album.

As some will remember from the debut album, Wojtek loves movies and the new songs are actually a musical concept based on the movie “The dark city”. Quite a lot of samples from this movie are used throughout these songs and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should asap!

The production is quite good though I would have liked a bit thicker guitar sound and the keyboards more upfront in the mix. Now it’s a bit hard to really hear what very cool keyboard parts are being played and they simply deserve to be heard louder. But despite this little blemish, I can really recommend this terrific album, not only to the Luciferion adepts, but to every Death Metal freak! (Saldiac, August 21, 2003)

No Fate. Only The Power Of Will. Luciferion’s second album of self awareness closely tips to the divine “Demonication (The Manifest)” released in 1994. It took leading man Wojtek Lisicki nine years to come up with the sequel on the first album. Four songs drenched in blasphemy result in the ultimately rebel album, very much influenced by the classic Morbid Angel. Like no other band Luciferion come that close to the grandmasters themselves and with the perfect sound as on “The Apostate” they even surpass Morbid Angel on some levels. Included on this release is the five track demo “The Demon Of 1994” and a Celtic Frost cover song. (FilipD, October 07, 2006)
