‘Gruwelijk Onthaal’ is the third full-length album by Dutch heretics Kaeck, comprising seven tracks of infernal Black Metal that cuts straight to the bone. Formed in 2014, the band also features members of Sammath. While Sammath is predominantly fast and aggressive, Kaeck focuses more on building an atmosphere reminiscent of old Scandinavian Black Metal, with bands like Gehenna and Immortal coming to mind.
The album’s lyrics are presented in Dutch, adding to the mystique and eeriness, as the language barrier gives this album a personal touch. This adds an interesting dynamic to the overall representation. From the artwork to the music, the album’s aesthetic is straightforward yet enjoyable.
‘Door Gespleten Tongen Bezworen’ introduces the album with a fast-paced assault of shredding riffs and drums, punctuated by sporadic keyboards that add depth to the compositions without dominating the sound. The keyboards are really well integrated, lending the album a particular atmosphere that I can only describe as unholy. They effectively mix up the atmosphere, but their true strength lies in the mid-tempo sections, where the music immerses you in these aural rituals, painting a picture of war-torn landscapes and death.
The production is excellent for a Black Metal release, with all instruments – from the bass to the guitars to the drums – clearly audible in the mix, including the vocals, which feature abrasive mid-range rasps and occasional frantic shrieks. The well-structured songs make it easy to follow and appreciate the music without needing multiple listens.
The drums are creative and well-played, not overly flashy, but rhythmically on point, pounding away like nails being driven into flesh. The evil-sounding riffs create an apocalyptic atmosphere of fire and brimstone, paired with hateful vocals and eerie synths.
‘Paterhexolimaat’ is another solid track, showcasing all the band’s strengths summed up in one song, with excellent guitar work and an haunting mid-paced atmosphere that draws you into the abyss.
If you’re a fan of Sammath or other Dutch Black Metal bands like Wrok, Funeral Winds and Countess, check out Kaeck, as this is some truly well executed-Black Metal that ticks all the boxes.
