Gutswamp – Virulent Pleasures [EP]

gutswamp – virulent pleasures [ep]

Info

These short old school Death Metal EPs still manage to drag out the absolute worst in me.

When the first notes of ‘Old Enough To Aim’ blast through my living room early in the morning — right before the family breakfast — my vision turns war-red and venom floods my brain. It makes me wonder whether my children could actually survive three days locked in the basement without food or water, and whether it’s truly possible to lull your wife to sleep with the soothing rhythm of a sledgehammer.

Since I’ve been working as a kindergarten teacher for over 25 years — and my school principal reminds me almost daily to act like a mature and responsible adult — I settle for mixing two sachets of laxatives into my little brats’ breakfast cereal just before dropping them off at school and give my wife’s chihuahua its first swimming lessons in our goldfish aquarium. But I digress, dear readers. Back to business.

Once again, Rotted Life manages to slap a mouth-watering slab of Death Metal filth onto tape. These five young degenerates from Zagreb serve up a puke bucket full of old school Death Metal savagery, the kind that’s downright nipple-licking filthy. The opening track rams itself into your ears with a full minute of chaos — no tight, technical wankery here, just wet, boggy filth, clearly indebted to Autopsy and Repulsion.

‘Virulent Pleasures’ and ‘Malodorous Gloom’ offer up a fluid blend of fast tempos and groovy passages, swinging enough to get even my wife’s udders bouncing. I do check out slightly during ‘Minced and…’, which leans toward Crustcore — a raspy screamer, who sounds like he was yanked out of bed last minute, opens his throat, but unfortunately it hits like a fart in church compared to the rest of this otherwise coherent EP.

In short: another excellent release through Rotted Life Records. Short, nasty, and to the point, with killer artwork and the power to drag your inner degenerate shamelessly to the surface.
