Although the 5th full-length, or 4th if one does not consider ‘The Morrisound Session’ to be a full-length, is based on the 1982 movie ‘The New York Ripper’, and in the movie the killer uses a duck voice and quaks, the title is remarkably fitting for today’s world.
Musically, the Death Metal of Fulci continues to evolve and, aside from brief moments featuring a rapper, a sample or some synth, it is primarily Death Metal that you hear on ‘Duck Face Killings’,. The influence of Cannibal Corpse and Avulsed during their ‘Stabwound Orgasm’ and ‘Yearning for the Grotesque’ eras remains audible in the music that Fulci releases through the speakers. Additionally, you can now hear hints of Monstrosity’s ‘In Dark Purity’ and moments of “How should Avulsed sounds when they play like Bolt Thrower”, particularly in a riff or melodic line.
I cannot quite get behind the online hype when it comes to Fulci, but ‘Duck Face Killings’ is a pleasant listen and I definitely hear the upward trend.
