Mördann is one heck of busy guy. Aurora Mortis, Faded Memories, Moonlight Spirit and Vivvaden are all bands that he formed in 2024 (with the latter two in collaboration with band member Malacath) and with whom he released a release or two, and that’s not even the full lists of band involvements. Another new addition to his impressive resume of 2024 activities is Vampyric Bloodlust, who released two EPs and an ambitious 66-minute-long album in the span of a mere two months. The first of those releases is ‘Midnight Slaughter’, the band’s first output that will be released on cassette towards the end of 2024 by WolfKult Religion.
On ‘Midnight Slaughter’ Mördann opts for a very raw and minimalistic type of Black Metal that is best described as furious in pace with skincrawling tonality. The cold and gnarly riffs may be rather repetitive, but they serve their purpose just right. Despite, or perhaps due to his many different outlets, Mördann knows darn well that it just takes a few good riffs to make a good song. With a monotonous and relentless drum department, variation is rather obscured in the mix, if not entirely absent. Instead, the music of Vampyric Bloodlust is rather more focussed on delivering a hypnotising and merciless beating. Topped off with raspy shrieks, Vampyric Bloodlust indeed manages to tick pretty much all of the boxes of unsettling and raw and merciless Black Metal.
Whether the menacing pace of releases will work with a rather monotonous formula is left to be judged by the later outputs of the band. But for a first release, ‘Midnight Slaughter’ is an enjoyable recording. Perfect fodder for those that are into bareboned, raw and ferocious Black Metal.
