Surturs Lohe – Vor Walvaters Thron

surturs lohe – vor walvaters thron

Info

A wonderful, sad intro opens this CD; what a marvellous spherical track this is, it has been long since I heard one like this! Those who love the old epic works of Bathory will be thrilled with this Surturs Lohe, including the clean vocals that are occasionally monotonic in a true ‘Quorthonian’ way, and with vile screams. Yet this band is anything but a copy of these Pagan/Black pioneer.

Surturs Lohe generally sings in German (apart from ‘To Walhall We’ll Ride’) and delivers one fine piece of Germanic epic Metal. No complicated blast beats, impossible breaks and other extremities, yet simple in the right way: melodic and still very heavy! After opener ‘Wigrids Weiten’, which is played in the exact right mood because of the use of violin or cello (I can’t tell!) comes the slow and heavy at first ‘Nebelthronend Wälder’, in which the band works with the two kind of voices (clean and screams). Halfway this song the tempo is exceeded to mid-tempo and high, something characteristic for the compositions on this album: just check the great title track, which lasts about 8 minutes without boring one second.

The only English languaged track, ‘To Walhall We’ll Ride’ is not different just because of the language, yet also as this song is more a Viking Metal like song and not so much paganist, yet it is a great song too. ‘Muspelsturm’ is a track that has to be heard by Falkenbach fans; GREAT! The acoustic elements (flute, violin and acoustic guitar) are dosed very well throughout the album. On a label like Christhunt you can not expect a Class A sound and production, yet I believe the quality is overall good.

An excellent CD of which fans of Pagan and Viking metal do not need wondering whether this one is worth while: BUY IT! And do play ‘Vor Walvaters Thron’ and ‘Muspelsturm’ as loud as you can!
