Fellmoon – Fellmoon [Re-Issue]

One of the best demos of 2022, at least in my opinion, was the self-titled debut of the Trondheim, Norway, based Fellmoon. At the time of its release there was already some substantial interest, and Inferna Profondus Records ultimately released the demo on LP in June 2023.

Apart from that it was a fantastic demo filled with raw Lo-Fi Black Metal and single haunting cosmic piano strokes, ‘Fellmoon’ also deserves a revisit as the LP version features an additional track, ‘☾☾☾☾’. On this track the sound is possibly even rawer and more Lo-Fi than on the original demo. This applies to the drums, guitars and vocals, but the piano strokes still lie dominantly draped upon the gritty Black Metal. The piano also feels a little bit more elaborate, at times expanding from the often single keystrokes featured on the first three tracks to actual melodies in ‘☾☾☾☾’. The result is still just as alienating as the other tracks, and revisiting this demo half a year after its original release the impact is still as strong.

Outside the addition of the new song, only the color of the cover has changed. The three original tracks sound unchanged to the demo, as it should be. Releasing ‘Fellmoon’ in its original form is fully justified, as this deserves to be brought to a larger audience. That is of course relatively speaking, as gritty and raw Lo-Fi Black Metal with cosmic pianos may not be to everyone’s taste. But those that are drawn to the description would do well to give Fellmoon the attention, although I’m sure that Inferna Profondus Records is already on the radar of those that appreciate the style.
