Mánþiel – Odes Past & Mysticism from the Southern Lands

Dependent on what source you check this latest recording by Chilean Mánþiel is either the second full-length album in the span of only around two weeks, or a very lengthy new EP. But regardless of the marketed format, it clocks in at almost 45 minutes, which makes it a worthy listen. And, frankly, this is quite a different recording compared to the ‘A Thousand Ornaments Of The Cosmos’-album that was released almost at the same time – also accompanied by another recording, the ‘From Lycanthropic Realms Of Sorrow’-demo.

The biggest difference is that ‘Odes Past & Mysticism From The Southern Lands’ feels much more in aligned with the band’s previous work. While it does sound all gloomy and doomy, it lacks a bit of a recognizable touch to it – something that much of Lord Valtgryftåke’s music suffers from. But, at least this latest recording in a row is pretty much enjoyable for the well-composed tracks and the easy to digest production.

It is exactly that production that sets ‘Odes Past & Mysticism From The Southern Lands’ apart from the other two releases from 2024. The other two definitely had a more crude sound and rough edge, especially the demo recordings were not only raw but downright deliciously Lo-Fi. It gave the music a bit more bite and a more distinct sound of their own.

If you were a fan of those huge amounts of releases wearing the Lord Valtgryftåke-sound, this one by Mánþiel will not disappoint you. And although I also loved hearing this latest offering under the Mánþiel banner, I honestly prefer the more raw edged recordings over these more smooth and ear-friendly Black Metal tunes, these tend to go down just a bit too easily without leaving that many memorable moments.
