Casket Flesh is a relatively new Death Metal playing entity from the United States that spawned in 2022. Prior to this review, they’ve also released the demo ‘Soundscapes of Horror’ and the single ‘Buried Beneath Human Remains’. All these previous works are put on display on this EP, also titled ‘Buried Beneath Human Remains’.
Casket Flesh kick off with an intro that sounds like it comes straight from a horror movie, consisting of layers of unsettling synthesisers. Once the mood is set and the intro slowly fades, Casket Flesh comes raging in with mid to fast-paced Old School Death Metal. The riffs alternate between tremolo riffs, slow doomy parts with the occasional lead guitar thrown in for good measure (not too dissimilar from Autopsy on Mental Funeral) and groovy palm muted rhythms that might be associated with Baphomet (US) or Bolt Thrower. Whilst the riffs are plenty and varied, that alone doesn’t create good and memorable songs. The songwriting is where Casket Flesh excels from lots of other contemporaries. Each song is crafted meticulously with catchy choruses, especially ‘Nights of Terror’.
The production is rather murky. Every instrument has lots of reverb slapped to it, especially the vocals. The drums sound bass heavy and devoid of treble, to the point that one wonders if the drums are played without any cymbals (except for the very audible ride cymbal). The guitars (including bass), however, sit low in the mix and sound very light, as if they choose to use the bare minimum of distortion. This does, however, allow for a very clean sound overall, with the guitars mixed in so low. Personally, I would’ve loved to have the guitars sound more meaty and heavy.
All in all, Casket Flesh delivers Death Metal that appeals to fans of the genre with a preference for catchy and crudely produced OSDM.
