Hungary. Dark horses, eh? Marblebog, Sear Bliss and now Aetherius Obscuritas, the brainchild of wrathful wraith Arkhorrl aka Vágvölgyi Viktor (assisted here for the first time by human session drummer Zson). On his fourth full-length in as many years, the one from Szigetvár reaches out to a wider audience than hitherto courtesy of Paragon Records, one of the most interesting labels around these days. Is it any good? Does pussy juice taste like nectar?
This is a nice shot in the arm of Black Metal, which isn’t exactly thriving at present. There are too many parasites on the scene, sucking the life from the underground, but still some quality comes along every once in a while to embrace the painted corpses with a cold kiss of death. Melodic, atmospheric and eerie, ‘Víziók’ manages to avoid corniness trapdoors as it ingratiates its mantra upon the listener, offering a flavour of traditionalism and much harshness too.
Arkhorrl emits a truly rasping shriek whenever he sets his soul to it and this adds ample menace and malice to a melodious but creepy maelstrom. There’s nothing particularly innovative or technical taking place here but good music is about feel rather than prowess and Aetherius Obscuritas captures a sound that should have fans of underground Black Metal universally smiling or grimacing or whatever the fuck it is we do to look impressed.
