‘From Haavardstun’ (re-released as an self-titled EP) was originally released in 1997 as a limited 7″, but it seems that someone in the band or at Frostscald Rec. realized that an EP of this quality shouldn’t be a rare thing to find.
The two songs on this EP are fantastic; they’re atmospheric and undeniably were made in the spirit of Black Metal, but they possess a sort of different character. They’re more melodic, expressing the beauty of nature rather than the usual grim fair back then, much like early Ulver, Isengard and Storm.
Bak De Syv Fjell (translated as “Behind The Seven Mountains”) and particularly main man Haavard have been sort of an enigma. While drummer Kvitrafn has gone on to perform with many projects such as Gorgoroth and Wardrunga, this is the only musical output under Haavard’s belt.
It’s a huge shame too, because this EP will leave you wanting much more. But with rumours of a reunion we can only hope that a full length is under way.
