Black Metal is Norway and Norway is Black Metal.
Svartelder is a band from the misty and cold mountains of Norway and ‘Trenches’ is the third full-length release of this entity through Soulseller Records, although in past years the band cooperated with the Dusktone label.
I grew up listening to Black Metal from Norway and Svartelder surely sound like a typical band residing there, and very promising Black Metal with razor-sharp guitars that declare what is about to be revealed. Svartelder uses a different approach when it comes to creating music: drums are recorded first, followed by the other instruments. Although the first 4 songs sounded really solid to me, the second half of this release offered a bit of a standstill; not that the songs are bad, but they are more of the same. Still, this work is worth your time and it will certainly be an enjoyable listen.
For fans of Dødheimsgard, this release is highly recommended.
