The stench of death is present.
Catalan band Messe de Minuit return two years after their first dark musical offering now with ‘The Neophyte’, a 7” with two tracks devoted to occultism and necromancy, demonstrating that less is more within the true spirit of pure Black Metal.
With only one demo released in 2024, titled ‘Invocation’, and this new work once again released by the German label Iron Bonehead Productions, Messe de Minuit transports us, through its mid- and fast-paced passages that evoke the atmosphere of Greek Black Metal, to the sounds of occult forces, the silence of the night, and the whispers of the unknown.
‘Necromantic Night’ and ‘The Neophyte’ are the tracks that make up this release, with a total running time of just over 13 minutes and limited to 200 copies.
These are tracks that lead us along dark paths in search of forbidden knowledge and power, through truly great Black Metal riffs, mystical and refined guitar solos, sinister vocal summonings, majestic and well-executed keyboard work, and build-ups that not only create a haunting atmosphere but ultimately culminate in catharsis, a necromantic catharsis.
This is a first-class release in every way. Musically, but visually as well, with an old-school layout created by vocalist Lucifogo, owner of the label and fanzine that bears his moniker, and great analog portraits by artist Ari Tinieblas. And this comes as no surprise, as its members, Eosforos, Crucifier, C., Lord Mortuorum and Lucifogo, are involved in a number of respected Catalan and international bands within the extreme and occult Metal scene.
So listen to this work in the darkness of the night.
