Sepulchral Conjurator is a relatively new band who deliver their first demo with ‘Ceremony Ritual I’. This already happened late last year with a first self-released on cassette tape, which they reissued in early spring. But now Profaner Records is also there to give this demo a third edition on cassette tape. Then it must be very special, or particularly good, you will think? Well, that dog won’t hunt. Not for either view. But it is definitely worth checking out nonetheless.
This foursome from Ecuador hails the Latin American tradition of wild and savage Black/Death Metal. So, in short, you are getting just under twenty minutes of utterly brutal Extreme Metal that holds the tipping point in between Sarcófago and Blasphemy with a bit of Angelcorpse and Abominator added to it. That justifies the statement that it is nothing particularly special and Sepulchral Conjurator are not quite the sharpest knife in the cutting block either. But what the band might lack in terms of musical ingenuity or persuasive craftsmanship, they make up for with enthusiasm and contagious energy. When the music slows down a bit, the remarkably strange guitar sound shines through, as if they are using an electric chainsaw instead of an actual musical instrument. At these specific moments the band also shows a bit of their naïve and juvenile song writing skills. Again, it is not something that truly bothers me as I am just fond of those unbridled bursts of energy and uncontrolled aggression.
‘Ceremony Ritual I’ brings you quite the standard elements of chaos-ridden Black/Death Metal: fast drumming, sharp riffing and barking vocals, all wrapped up in a thundering and quite messy production. It might not be the best band or demo in their musical field, but I honestly and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
