Ossuary – Abhorrent Worship

ossuary – abhorrent worship

Info

Emanating from the depths of the Midwest, Ossuary have quickly built up a reputation of themselves over the past decade with barely any output with just 2 demos and an EP. Yet quality is not measured in quantity and the band understands this perfectly. Their grimy, caveman sounding brand of Death/Doom is equally crushing and odious. After a long wait, they continue the success found on their demos with their full length – ‘Abhorrent Worship’.

For those not familiar with Ossuary, their brand of Death/Doom is of the most wretched and foul kind. Taking influence from all the usual suspects like Autopsy, Incantation, Cianide but also sprinkling it with a dash of the more unhinged energy of eclectic acts like Goatlord. The result is 40 minutes of pummeling, dreadful (in the best way) mid-paced Death Metal that punishes the listener through its cacophonous guitar tone, thick bass and drums that perfectly help transition to the brief, faster passages that are on display. All accompanied by a strong vocal performance by Izzi, whose growls perfectly embody that of a beast arising from a long slumber.

Truth be told, that is the general feeling of this record – being ensnared in a dark, wet cave with little hope for survival. Normally it would be wise to talk a bit about the varying dynamics that happen across different songs on the album, but Abhorrent Worship feels like a comprehensive experience rather than one that can be dissected. It is an album made for fanatics of Death/Doom, reflected in its constant tempo throughout the whole duration. For the un-initiated or those with passing interest, this record will sound largely the same. However, its consistent approach gives it a very hypnotic feeling to it, as each riff crescendos towards a big explosive end. All of this is aided by an incredible production job which breathes life into each instrument but still retaining that ominous atmosphere the band are clearly going for.

With ‘Abhorrent Worship’, Ossuary are very much preaching to the choir and not reinventing the wheel – both within the broader Death/Doom subgenre and their previous work. This will not win over people on the fence, but will instead entice loyal listeners of this particular strand of Death Metal such as myself. Despite the lack of variance, there is much to admire here for any lover of disgusting and repugnant music. One to pick up and listen in the darkness.
