Obsidian Scapes – Endless Sea of Dead Mirrors [EP]

obsidian scapes – endless sea of dead mirrors [ep]

Info

You awake. The world is not what it was before you had closed your eyes. Its colour, its touch, its smell and sound, everything and all has vanished. Panic. In vain you’re trying to move, but to no avail. Realising you’ve been strapped uncomfortably tight in a wheelchair that has been set in motion by a force you can’t perceive. As creaky wheels roll forth, black and white images appear from the darkness. Images of your life. Forcing you to relive the most gruesome chapters of your life. Chapters that are mirroring what you’ve repressed purposefully for years. Thoughts of despair, anguish and pain rise. Panic. Unable to deviate your sight. This nightmare forces itself upon you. No way out. There’s nothing you can do to escape this imminent downfall of your life.

It is this atmosphere that Obsidian Scapes forces down your throat with their EP ‘Endless Sea of Dead Mirrors’. It’s a soundtrack to demise and despair. A soundtrack that’s cruel and it’s not here to be played in the background. It is unable to ignore, it will lure you in. Thick down-tuned guitars create a dense wall of sound. The drums are battering fast and slow against the wall, only further strengthening it. The vocals do break through the wall. They’re sung with power. So much so that the voice is on the verge of break-up, creating an emotive screaming that’s as beautifully clean as it is distorted. A true cry of agony. Astonishingly, trembling at the foundations is a gnarly distorted bass that is boldly present.

‘Endless Sea of Dead Mirrors’ has two parts, the title track and ‘At My Funeral’. The latter song being originally written by Sigh, at which Obsidian Scapes did a great job in rewriting it to their own formula. This leads to both tracks flowing solidly together. Both are filled with layers upon layers of intertwined melodies, and this is vital to keep any (predominantly) slow song engaging. Perhaps, the one thing that made this nightmarish soundtrack complete is the use of eerily, noisy synthesisers. These are put to good use and sit just beneath the haunting leads of the guitars. All in all, a great soundtrack of pitch black madness.

Obsidian Scapes have successfully created an immersive experience in Doom Metal form, that is likely to resonate in those whose heart is heavy. This is not timorous.

‘Endless Sea of Dead Mirrors’ serves as a prelude to Obsidian Scapes’ upcoming full-length ‘Death Chants Echo From Aphotic Void’ which will strike down in March 2025 via Darkness Shall Rise Productions.
