Though Norway’s icy grip on Black Metal has loosened since it’s glory days, there are still plenty of releases that serve as a reminder to keep an ear to the north. One such release is the 2023 debut EP ‘Mystikk og Mørke’ from new heavy hitters Hjemsøkt. This is another project including the mighty Peregrinus, who has been making his presence known in the underground through a breadth of noteworthy projects (Unholy Craft, Kvad, Heraldic Blaze, Praefuro, etc.) that have all put out great material within the last few years.
Just looking at the cover art and reading the title, you already know what you’re in for. The EP is 6 songs totaling a little over 24 minutes of true Norwegian second wave worship. This is a great example of knowing your sound well and sticking to it. The frigid guitar tones on mid paced riffs carry a huge intensity really brings out the classic era Darkthrone sound. But a “dreamier” production with some pagan influence through folkish choir sections and acoustic interludes helps keep it from being just a soul-less copy. Sort of a middle ground between ‘Bergtatt’ and ‘A Blaze in the Northern Sky’.
This release is a very solid listen that I feel would be hard to dislike. It’s a faithful display of the classic Norwegian Black Metal sound that may not be anything revolutionary at this point, but it’s a style that still stands the test of time.
