Cult Of Orpist – Cult Of Orpist [EP]

cult of orpist – cult of orpist [ep]

Info

The combination of the band name of this EP and especially the cover art, I was allured into checking out this band from new metal band. Why? Because everybody loves their fair share a bit of graverobbing zombies and because I have no fckn clue what an “Orpist” is. Even a quick search on the internet didn’t teach me a lot whole lot about it. So, then the Death/Thrash Metal of these Greeks should do the talking…

This EP was originally a self-released digital eponymous effort, clocking in at 16 minute-something, but now it gets a proper CD release by the new Theogonia Records from Poland. For this joyful event the band offered to add another track (a rehearsal version from one of the already enclosed songs), with which the EP hits the 20 minute mark. However kind it is of the gentlemen to offer us an extra song, musically they don’t really bring anything earth-shattering. Their brand of Death/Thrash Metal is best described as a slower and groovier version of Defleshed, but it never has anything that comes close to the fury of those revered Swedes. Cult Of Orpist themselves claim that their music is suitable for those who are into bands such as Toxic Holocaust, Kreator, Entombed, Power Trip and Goatwhore. But although I do think I hear what they are aiming at, musically, these fine lads are lightyears away from any of these bands – but tracing Goatwhore back requires quite a lot of imagination. The rather standard and pretty unimpressive riffs and drum tracks just don’t really deliver the aggression or depth and the shouty Hardcore-ish vocals seem a little bit out of place too – these gentlemen also seem a bit too old for shouting “motherfucker”.

So, nahh, not really. While there definitely are a few interesting riffs and musical ideas, this first attempt is not all that convincing yet. But, at least they have a good band name (whatever a “Orpist” is) and the EP has some great cover art.
