From Peru comes Bestial Rites, a band that has been around for over a decade but only now releases their first feat. Within its ranks we can find drummer Toñín Destructor, who was at the birth of the Peruvian extreme Metal scene with Hadez, but also featured in Anal Vomit. He is joined by former Anal Vomit vocalist Manfred Beingolea, and the band is completed by Paul Lord Chakal on guitars and bass player Peter Mortis (of which the latter is no longer part of the band but is part on their first recording). And that comes in the shape of ‘El Abismo’, a demo released by Wolfkult Religion on tape.
Much like the sound of the former bands of Toñín Destructor, or their compatriots in Goat Semen, Bestial Rites presents Peruvian Extreme Metal in all its primitive and unadultered glory. A sound that infuses Thrash, Death and Black Metal, Bestial Rites leans slightly more towards a Death Metal sound. This is not in the least because of the growling vocal style and heavier guitar tone, although nobody will deny that the very basis of the riffs on ‘El Abismo’ are essentially Thrash Metal. Indeed, Bestial Rites is very much a band that finds itself musically in the 80’s, at a time that bands were pushing the Thrash Metal scene into increasingly more extreme directions. Anal Vomit and Goat Semen indeed, but the likes of Necrovore, Angelcorpse, Sarcófago, Slaughter and early Slayer are revered equally by Bestial Rites. The last comparison is easiest, as one of the six tracks that appear on the demo is a cover of the Slayer classic ‘Black Magic’. Done in typical Peruvian style, the focus is not on technical prowess or perfectly copying the original, but much rather bringing an ode to inspiration with genuine passion and old school feeling. It leaves us with a product that is exactly what you would expect: wild, heavy and rough around the edges.
The South American Extreme Metal scene has always had that unique feel to it and most can be attributed to that untamed energy and enthusiasm. Bestial Rites may have released their debut demo 30ish years after the legends of the scene started their revolutionary influence on the Metal scene, but they bring their music with a similar conviction and passion.
