Sometimes I can imagine I might come across as a pedant. Within VM, we have several Statler & Waldorfs walking around both in front of and behind the scenes, but it’s mostly born out of a certain passion and preference for the music. At least, that’s what I tell myself. Additionally, I don’t believe for a second that any band member loses sleep over what we pour out onto the keyboard. That being said, I have been critical of Demonical on several occasions, and in my view, quite rightly so. Naturally! Let there be no doubt about it.

With ‘Mass Destroyer’, I am giving our Swedish friends in Demonical another chance to see if they’re sticking to the path or if they have moved away from it. It has turned out to be a bit of both. With tracks like ‘We Conquer the Throne’, ‘Sun Blackened’, ‘Cemented in Ire’, and ‘Dödsmarsch’, it is clear that the old up-tempo Dismember-style Swedish Death Metal still flows through their veins. However, with the side note that the sound is cleaner than, say, a contemporary Interment or Lik, to mention two colleagues. But just as on the previous EP, ‘Fallen Mountain’, is included on the album, which I personally feel wasn’t needed; you could perhaps label it a “gateway” track.

But all in all, ‘World Destroyer’, is a step forward as far as I’m concerned, or call it a step back to basics. Now they just need to tweak the sound, which for me is still a bit too clean.
