The Projectionist is a Canadian Black Metal band that delivered their fifth album. Some say “The Stench of Amalthia” is a Black Metal operetta but to be honest Carach Angren play Black Metal operettas/operas. This one here is a Black Metal radio play about a dying former film noir starlet Amalthis Grahame who is isolated in her palatial home.
The music is disturbing raw and dirty Black Metal. Classic tremolo picking and blast beats are interrupted by radio play elements which sound like a radio play from the 70s or 80s. The music creates a nice dark and disturbing scene of horror. The terrible sounding vocals that reminds me of Gollum swallowing broken glass are perfect for the music but, to be honest, terrible for telling a story. Sometimes it‘s very hard to follow the plot which is sad because it is surely a thrilling story. But like I mentioned before Carach Angren showed us how it is done.
I definitely like the music but the whole concept does not work for me. (HaCeBo)
