This is one of those splits that you knew that was eventually going to happen. It is no surprise that Tenebro-chief Hannes “Il Beccamorto” Grabstein is an avid Mortuary Ghoul fan, with his Dismal Fate Records he has been releasing a good amount of the American one-man band’s back catalogue – at least the version on cassette tape. So, teaming up with both his own band and his label for a collaboration with Mortuary Ghoul wasn’t quite the surprise of the year. Clad in a signature cover for both acts, this seems to seal the blood pact once and for all.
As befits a good Italian “gentleman”, Tenebro gets ahead of his guest and dishes us three songs with the now very familiar gory ingredients. Although it may be worth noting that these three songs have a slightly different atmosphere compared to the previous material. The guitar work is less heavy and unwieldy, despite having nothing to do with Black Metal there is almost a hint of it on the guitar sound. Vocally, too, it is a little less churlish. But otherwise all the recognisable elements are very much in place: the simple riffs, the even simpler drums and the film samples. Everything is right there, yet Tenebro sounds a bit more varied on these recordings and therefore comes across a bit better.
Whether it was smart of Tenebro to go up first or not, I’m not entirely sure. What is abundantly clear, however, is that Mortuary Ghoul bulldozes right over the Italians. The American’s crushing sound leaves no trace of Tenebro’s, in retrospect, fragile sound. It’s no secret that Mortuary Ghoul took its inspiration from Mortician and, as on previous releases, everything about this gory carnage of an homage to the masters is right. The overwhelming sound, the ultra-mega-super-heavy Will Rahmer-like vocals, the rattling drums and the much better-integrated film samples…. It’s a real treat to hear if, like me, you’ve now been waiting 20 years for a new Mortician album.
