Salacious Gods – A Chrestomathy Of Blasphemous Supremacy [Compilation]

salacious gods – a chrestomathy of blasphemous supremacy [compilation]

Info

I bet you have conversations with your friends about albums and say to each other  “Really? 30 years old?” when the release year was mentioned. It’s that uncanny feeling that it doesn’t feel like 30 years mixed with the facts that albums still stand tall concerning impact and feeling towards it. When I received the news that Salacious Gods was celebrating their 30th anniversary I had the same thought: “Really, 30 years?” and started to remember their timeline and releases, of which their debut ‘Askengris’ supposed to be reviewed in one of the physical VM issues back at the end of the 90s, but for reasons I can’t remember anymore, it didn’t got featured. Maybe it didn’t cut the shift as we were a bit fed up with the more Symphonic part of Black Metal in those days, maybe the Cradle of Filth / Dimmu Borgir alike imagery on the artwork, maybe we just made other choices…who knows…

After that, we’ve followed the Dutch Black act for quite a bit, as we reviewed their ‘Sunnevot’ (2002) and ‘Piene’ (2005) releases, as well as the come-back album ‘Oalevluuk’ (2023), and even interviewed them back in 2001.

On this 30th anniversary compilation the whole musical journey passes by, with live recordings (2024, 2023 and 1999) with tracks of all albums and one track of the ‘The Slumbering Silence’ (1998) and the ‘Mutilation’ promo (2002). The journey,  which started as a Nordic Symphonic Black Metal influenced endeavour,  transformed into a fast straight in your face Black Metal with both Norwegian and Swedish influences. Both sides of the band ultimately merged together on their latest effort effort ‘Oalevluuk’, a very good comeback in my opinion.

The sound quality of the 2023/2024 live tracks is pretty good and captures the energy of Salacious Gods performance quite well. The 1999 recordings alternate a bit and let the keyboard’s influence be heard in the sound of that time. An aspect that reoccurs on ‘My Effigy Unfurled and Withered’ of their demo. At the end, you will hear a raw version of ‘Hexencult’ of the ‘Mutilation’ promo, which also appeared on ‘Piene’.

A worthy compilation to celebrate a milestone that is 30 years of existence, with the mandatory yet always neat collage of old photos and flyers as well as liner-notes. Salacious Gods is maybe not the most mentioned Black Metal act from The Netherlands, but definitely deserves your attention.
