This is a split release featuring two bands who’ve been knocking about in the scene for ages. They’re generally considered a decent bunch, but haven’t reached the heights as some of their contemporaries. Both bands provided demo-sounding material for this EP. Protector contributed one track, ‘Realm of Crime’, and Suicidal Winds feature with two numbers, ‘Necromancer’ and ‘Cursed’, as listed on the sleeve.
The connection between Suicidal Winds and Protector goes back a good fifteen years or so. This isn’t just because Mathias Johansson is shared by both bands; they also both appeared on a Sodom tribute, albeit with Protector under the moniker Martin Missy and the Protectors. The association is so clear, Stevie Wonder would be nudging Ray Charles saying, “Did you see that?!”
Protector, originally a German Thrash/Death act but now based in Sweden and having leaned more towards Thrash/Black Metal over the years, released a good album in 2022 called ‘Excessive Outburst of Depravity’. On this split, they’re harking back to their previous record, ‘Summon the Hordes’, as ‘Realm of Crime’ is a rough version of the song that appeared on that album. The Slayer-esque intro is largely the same, but the overall feel of the track is a slight touch slower than what made it onto the album. Or the rough sound gives that impression after hearing both version back and forth.
The Suicidal Winds side features two tracks they recorded after their last album, ‘Chthonian Sun’ from 2014, which still features Fredrik Andersson before his unfortunate passing in 2023. With Suicidal Winds too, the raw sound is prominent, and they continue down the path they forged on their last record: genuine Black/Thrash Metal.
This split won’t exactly set the world alight in terms of reputation, but for those interested in the last recorded work of Suicidal Winds that is avaiable, there seems to be a full-length ready on the shelf, or who generally appreciate these bands, it’s a nice little addition to the collection.
