If you want some nasty, brutal, nuclear War Metal, featuring a fair balance of Black metal and Death metal, this split is the one for you. (Also, the cover is fucking awesome)
Right off the bat, the Goatcorpse side starts into an extremely brutal blast into the head, with heavily reverbed vocals that sounds like the faint whispers of death on nuclear winds, kind of similar to the vocals utilised in Weregoat’s, ‘Unholy Exaltation of Full moon Perversity’ The riffs in this collection of sides definitely show off a more Black metal influence rather than Death metal, with certain atmospheric elements and a very evil satanic feeling. ‘The Secret (Secret of Fire)’ really harkens back to the old myths of reversing albums to find satanic messages; however, I feel personally that it drags on a bit too long and sort of breaks up the split unnecessarily. Overall, I’m more of a sucker for simple brutal War Metal rather than more bestial Black Metal stuff, however I can appreciate the soundscape that this album creates.
However, in the Gotthammer side, I knew right from the start that this would be the side for me. Opening straight into speedy blasts with a snare reminiscent of a Goregrind record, the vocals also had me hooked, with extremely animalistic, deep guttural vocalisations, that are somehow perfectly blended into the mix so as to not be first and forefront but act as more of another instrument in the wall of noise they present, sounding like a demon calling from the depths of hell. This really feels like Canadian War metal, calling back to classic bands like Blasphemy and really packing a punch. The Death metal influence is rife here, but also manages to really capture that Black Thrashy/ extremely fast but thin War metal sound proliferated by the likes of Revenge and Conqueror, whilst still maintaining the brutality of the Death metal sound, as well as this, the aforementioned Grind influence is subtle, but still detectable in the snare and the length of the songs. The riffs are awesome, also having much slower sludgy breaks that were just made to headbang to, like Sankara but less lofi and more emphasis on the punch. In totality, this side is brutal as fuck, the guitar and bass acting in a single unit, the drumming creating a wall of noise where the ping of the snare and the cymbals are fronting, and the vocals ripping through.
In conclusion, this split is a masterful mix of both the Black and Death sides of war metal, creating a super brutal and cool split that doesn’t stray too far from the normalcy of either genre, but still creates and cements their own stylistic approaches.
