Förgjord – Tie, Totuus & Kuolema [Demo / Re-release]

förgjord – tie, totuus & kuolema [demo / re-release]

Info

At the same time as the new album, ‘Perkeleen Weri’, we are served with a piece of Förgjord’s more distant past. Formed in 1995, the band existed under the monikers Brightness of Darkness, Winterflesh, Iceage before finally settling with the current name, but despite these changes there have been two constants since the early days: members Valgrinder and Prokrustes Thanatos. Their very first recording ‘Fratres Militiae Inferi’ was released in 2001, but is considered unofficial by the band themselves. Furthermore, most songs of that demo would end up being re-recorded for the demo ‘Tie, Totuus & Kuolema’, which was originally released in 2002. So in essence, while technically not the first release of Förgjord, this is as far a glimpse into the past as possible to listen to where the band came from.

The material on this release contains the original demo from 2002, supplemented with tracks recorded in 2000 and 2001, all of which has been mastered by M. Aspa in 2019. And listening to this very early material in comparison to the latest album it becomes clear how consistent the band has been. From the very earliest days the band has had a penchant for writing captivating melodies. Not only that, the music is already dynamic in pace and doesn’t shy away from some experimentation with clean vocals and more epic and melancholic parts. A song like ‘Fratres Militiae Inferi’ may be a little bit rougher around the edges, but in songs like ‘Corpus Christi’ the band has already been taking steps at diversifying their sound. In a song like ‘Vigasta Voimani’, within a beautiful singing riff we hear the same kind of promise of something out of the ordinary that would be fulfilled on some of their later albums.

Obviously, the band has evolved in terms of consistency and sophistication of their formula, but ‘Tie, Totuus & Kuolema’ shows that Förgjord from the very earliest beginning had a very clear vision for the band. Rougher in sound and songwriting, these demos are certainly worth owning, not only for nostalgia’s sake, but certainly also because the more unpolished material is pretty damn close in quality compared to what Förgjord releases to this day.
