Cursed Forest – Corpse in the Deep Forest [Demo / Re-Release]

cursed forest – corpse in the deep forest [demo / re-release]

Info

What we have here is a re-release of Cursed Forest’s demo ‘Corpse In The Deep Forest’. It was originally released back in 2020 on Heathen Records on tape. Two years later it was re-released by not less than two different records labels, Narok Phumi Records and Masters of Kaos Productions, with both labels releasing the demo on the CD format and Master of Kaos went as far as to release it digitally on their Bandcamp page.

Cursed Forest play Black Metal in way that feels crude and almost punky at times. It reminds me of the old demos from Carpathian Forest, Absurd or even Beherit. The songs are structured around power chord riffs, which sound like they’re played through a cheap and tiny amplifier. On ‘Protection Spirit’ there’s a section with a melodic lead, which is done rather tastefully. The aforementioned song is definitely the highlight of this demo, solely due to the melodic guitar lead. Drums are relatively standard, you’ve got your standard hard hitting ‘hard rock’ beats balanced with double bass beats, no blast beats or fancy thrills here. The real drawback for me is the vocalist. We’re treated with strangled, raspy shrieks from a guy that, I presume, worships Beherit’s Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance vocal style as heard on ‘Drawing Down The Moon’. As much as I love Beherit and their monumental first album, these vocals just sound weak and unconvincing.

For a demo that has been released thrice and by three different labels, I must admit that my expectations aren’t met. It’s nowhere near awful, but it doesn’t break any new ground. It’s mediocre at best. This is for the lovers of crude (punky) Black Metal with a discerning fetish for bands with Asian roots.
