In Greek mythology, the primordial deities (Faia, Uranus, Tartarus,…) represent the first generation of gods and goddesses. They embody fundamental forces and the physical foundations of the world. These primordial beings shaped the cosmos and set the stage for subsequent gods and creatures.
Erebus, personifies darkness. He is one of those primordial beings, born from Chaos alongside Nyx (Night).
Erebus is the father of Aether (the upper clear air) and of Hemera (Day) by Nyx. His name also refers to the darkness of the Underworld or the region through which souls pass to reach Hades. He can sometimes be synonymous with Tartarus or Hades.
Fangs of Erebus is the latest band from musician Rex V, Thailand. A musician who earned his reputation in Metal through bands such as Dei Tetra, Antiht and Awicha. He named it after the primordial god of darkness because he wanted to pursue something in the vein of Black/Death Metal or Blackened Death Metal. Something musically unsettling that would emanate darkness. Several other musicians were added until Fangs of Erebus gained momentum.
And it is it that the first demo, recorded in March in his private studio emerges into the light. Musically, Fangs of Erebus indeed combines the outspoken linear structure from Black Metal with the brutality and downtuned aggression from Death Metal. Technically, it all sounds flawless, the relentless hammering and blast beating on the drums the soaring hypnotic riffing of Black Metal, combine with the meaty distortion of Death Metal, the occasional panned etherial guitar solos and the aggressive, demonic downtuned vocals from lead guitarist Rex V that seem to rise from a cave located in Pandemonium itself.
Most of the 6 tracks clock out around the three to four inute mile. It’s all pretty plain, straightforward and right in your face. Fangs of Erebus don’t exactly aim at a particular sound but combine local South-East Asian Black and Death Metal into a boiling, agonizing dark Molotov cocktail that is ready to go off at any moment.
The demo itself was recorded in his own Viper’s Den studio and delivers sound wise tunes that are both solid and well-produced. Perhaps the band is still looking for its own sound or they will develop the current style. This remains something for the future. For now, you can enjoy the demo which is available in both digital and CD formats since March of this year.
And may a full-length album follow soon.
