After having released two full-length albums in 2022, the duo that together make for the Swedish Death Metal band Carnal Savagery, more or less took a bit of a break in 2023. Or well, not really, as they have written and recorded their fifth album at the very beginning of this year…
A new Carnal Savagery album is a bit like putting on another AC/DC or Motörhead album: they all more or less sound the same. Is that a problem? Nope. Not at all, but this is not the sort of band to turn to if you want to hear something different or renewing. Instead these guys just like to churn out those heavy HM-2 riffs and bang their heads to rather simple and mid-tempo rhythms. It starts to feel a bit like those Rogga Johansson-albums, yet where almost without any exception those Rogga albums tend to rock you to sleep with its endless snoozer tracks, Carnal Savagery at least serves you with a decent fix of Swedish Death Metal. A bit of a crunch here, some chugging there, a bit of atmospheric leads, growling vocals… you know the drill.
Yet, just like the preceding records, the overall sound is a bit too compressed and digital, consequently feeling not as organic as “the real deal” of those yesteryear’s Swedish Death Metal gods. Is that a problem? Hmmm, maybe. None of Carnal Savagery’s albums are really bad, but the generic character of the music in combination with the somewhat plastic sound makes me not really going back to any of their recordings. Not because they are bad, as again they are serving us an entertaining listen, but because there simply is so much better stuff out there.
