While Creeping Flesh’s ‘God’s Acres Rife With Flesh Adorned’ is fundamentally Death Metal, the small amount of Doom they inject into this is what gives it its unique sound. For the most part, the album chugs along with plenty of well weighted and catchy riffs, and the vocals are a massive reason for its success. The growls are deep and disgusting without being buried, and suit this dreary WWII atmosphere wonderfully.
These guys just about paint the picture in my head as the record plays, with none of it forced. It’s only when they slow things down where it really gets interesting. They let the riff breathe and hang for a beat and thus have a very dark atmosphere to the songs that slow down considerably, like in ‘Come Glorious Dawn’. This one has such a battlefield doom type atmosphere to it, almost representing the “light at the end of the tunnel of war” rather than the act of it.
Creeping Flesh just use Doom like an additional layer, and thus this album really succeeds.
A very fun record here, that with its groovy Death Metal, gut ripping vocals, and just a hint of doom atmosphere make for one hell of an enjoyable jam.
