Even though Demonical has been around for about 15 years and this is already their 6th full-length, I still can’t shake the feeling that they’re “the new band after Centinex”. Let’s blame that on old age.
Through the years, Demonical’s sound has become smoother and the melodies more melodic than at the band’s start. They are simply following that path, and while these veterans definitely deliver it with skill, it sometimes feels a bit like they’re just going through the motions.
A song like ‘Victorious’, is a good example of this, and ‘Slipping Apart’, featuring Heavy/Power vocalist Nils Patrik Johansson (of Astral Doors, etc.) is a detour that some will appreciate, but many will likely skip. It lacks a bit of the holy fire for me, even though there are enough up-tempo tracks to turn ‘World Domination’, into a solid EP.
That said, I can imagine the broader public getting more out of ‘World Domination’, than I did.
