A bit of throwback/nostalgia here. ‘The Vermin Speak’ is the very first recording/release of the Black/Death/Grind project Vølus from South Carolina, run by multi-instrumentalist Justin ‘Vølus’ Genoble who also owns and founded Vargheist Records. It was first released in 2018 and re-released in 2021.
Some of you may already be familiar with the label and the band name, not to mention the other projects and bands that are proudly featured on YouTube and on Bandcamp. Vølus is a darkness rising since 2018 and it’s about time we put the band and the man behind it all (and much more) into the spotlight.
Four tracks, a barrage of creepy insidious vocals, Viking Crown style and a poisonous concoction of Black and brutal Death Metal. Blast beats, wall-to-wall grinding, churning and screeching guitars and a stampede/avalanche of a rhythm section is the first calling card of Vølus, meant to pulverize everything in its way…The cataclysmic infection of both Black Metal and Death Metal yields a volatile mixture here which constantly erupts and explodes. Only 4 tracks, a mere 8 minutes of well-orchestrated chaos with mystical fantasy horror lyrics shows the potential of this solo project Vølus, both musical project and musician. It’s his baby and it’s a freakin’ monster… more releases are/were to follow.
In time, Justin would participate in several other projects such as Morgue Walker, Maggot Crown, Fall Of Gnosis, and a few others, but these are other stories which we hope to tell you in the near future. Basically, this recording still sounds good for a demo and as crisp as in 2018. Check it out and do check out the other releases.
Conclusion: there’s some good blackened Death and Death Metal talent hidden in the deep South.
