A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

Necro-E’s ‘Devoured Periphery’ is a chunk of Death Doom gold from back in 1991. Hailing from Tokyo, this is the band’s third or maybe even fourth demo following ‘Beginning of the Death’, ‘Assemblage of Emanated Embryo’ and possibly ‘Oozing Child’, but that one is hard to find info on and I’m not sure where it falls in the discography. On ‘Devouring Periphery’ we get a 28 minute slice of outrageously “rock and roll” spirited music within a macabre sonic swamp, and trust me every second of this demo is real as fuck old school Death Metal perfection with no bullshit.

Furious Thrash riffs meld with atmospheric haunting leads that reveal their rotten form once the clamour slows down to a fetid crawl. It’s very monstrous music with incredibly low vocals, the sound of an opened portal to somewhere you don’t want to be. Enter destroyer riffs with some extraterrestrial UFO synthisizer used just for a second, the slight and calculated usage of that specific frequency just jolted me like an electric shock. Then things are brought back over to a previous ‘Frankenstein’s Castle’ sounding riff, I love it, just fantastic stuff.

These guys make whatever random gear they have sing like a cackling witch which is impressive for what is I assume to an old keyboard or some pedals with their guitar.
There’s a super quiet guitar solo and then mega loud synth again at one part, very campy. The random mixing adds a certain charm I think. Fierce overdriven bass pulses out some start and stop Grindcore-like stuff while the drums are ripping out skank beats, rock beats, and that old school as fuck “batta batta batta batta” train blast. The drummer Takashi Tanaka also played/plays in the excellent bands Transgressor and Anatomia, a true Tokyo rocker.

We also get excellent song names and concepts like ‘Basilisk Duel’, ‘Body Snatcher’, or my personal favourite here ‘Disembowel With Embarrassing’. Just perfection. Absolutely intergalactic material that has a certain gloomy sulkiness to it. This is the perfect necro soundtrack to crushing some beers with your buddy and smoking a pile of whatever. Give it a go and enjoy. Another example of Japanese excellence in the output of kickass Metal music. If you don’t know Necro-E you need to quit fucking around and get on this stuff, pronto!
