Necrotesque doesn’t mess around trying to overpackage anything with ‘Et Mortui Resurgent’. This is straight forward, heavy Old School Death Metal featuring the signature Swedish chainsaw sound, booming lows, and tons of memorable, hard hitting riffs. You can clearly hear a significant nod to early “Grave” in the more heavy impactful sections of the release and the aggressive, more cutting guitar tone makes Entombed come to mind.
The vast majority of ‘Et Mortui Resurgent’ does lean into that familiar sound, but the title track includes some clean female classical vocals which adds a really effective layer of contrast between the harshness of the guitars and vocals.
A simple addition, but it works really well here. I just wish all of the riffs were as potent as some. There are a handful of passages that start out great, but then linger around for a moment or two too long, becoming a touch too repetitious before the song finally progresses to a new section or riff. It seems like this album connects even stronger when ‘Necrotesque’ tightens things down.
‘A Dead End’ is likely for this reason my favorite cut on the album. The song feels like it was written to piss people off from the very get go and it does not try to do anything more complex.
The aggression is palpable from the outset, the guitar riffage is direct and the album concludes on its most impactful notes. It’s clear there is more than enough heavy riff action here to justify the album itself.
