Necroferum – Visions From The Necrorealm [EP]

necroferum – visions from the necrorealm [ep]

Info

While Nuclear Winter Records always stood for impeccable releases of outstanding Death Metal bands, the Greek label particularly seemed to excel in recent months. I have been stunned by a good number of their releases with Chapel Of Samhain being one of the absolute highlights. To this I can now add this Costa Rican Necroferum. This latest addition is in the same musical regions as Dead Congregation, Grave Miasma and the like. Fans of dark Death Metal brimming with ancient evil will need to prick up their ears.

Something has been brewing in this Central American country for some time now, with solid releases from Death Metal bands like Astriferous, Bloodsoaked Necrovoid and Mortual and the more than excellent work of Black Metal band Umbra Conscientia on the renowned Terratur Possessions label, the country can’t really be overlooked anymore. But since the country only has a rather small scene, it wouldn’t come as a total surprise that all of these bands are more or less tied together with sharing various musicians, and so too is the case with Necroferum. This band was founded in 2023 by two members of Mortual, apparently to pursue a different musical direction. Or at least a little, as their roots in Mortual do shine through every now and then. And, to keep things just comfortably tied together, both bands also share their home turf over at Nuclear Winter Records’.

Yet, also without this background, every self-respecting Death Metal fan would easily recognize Necroferum’s musical antics. With lots of Black Metal-tinged atmosphere, rather intricate riffing, bellowing vocals and creative drumming ‘Visions From The Necrorealm’ really creeps closely up to Grave Miasma and Dead Congregation. In the second track of this EP, ‘Transcending From Spectral Fumes’ there is a gloomy and eerie Evoken-like passage that is laced with subdued blast beats which makes it impossible not to draw parallels with Dead Congregation. That means that we are being served with loads of dynamics and sudden twists and turns, allowing the music to embrace both an adventurous sound as well keeping it firmly tied to the old school aesthetics. Add to that an equally dark and gloomy production that emphasizes that well balanced musical formula, giving enough room for the doomy guitars and the reverbed vocals as well as those tasteful dry sounding drums…

Definitely an impressive debut EP from a band that might be new, but clearly is comprised of well-versed and seasoned musicians. And although it shouldn’t be seen as a competition of sorts an those Costa Rican bands are not all very much comparable, Necroferum can straight away share the top of the local scene with Mortual, and it is quite easy to forget about Astriferous and certainly the somewhat flat-sounding Bloodsoaked Necrovoid.
